Wednesday August 24

After a lovely breakfast we headed into Dublin. There is a bus stop just outside our B&B. All the buses that stop there can take one to downtown Dublin. Nice and convenient.
We spent the day riding around on a Hop-on Hop-off bus seeing the sights. We also did a lot of walking. It was wonderful to see downtown Dublin and hear about its rich history. We saw Dublin Castle then walked up to Christchurch Cathedral. It is an Anglican Cathedral. It was beautiful. Restoration was done on the Crypt in 2000. This was a very interesting part beneath the cathedral. I had a nice soup there for lunch.
After lunch we went next door to see a museum were we saw exhibits about Viking and Medieval Dublin. This was housed in an extra part or the cathedral. It was amazing to see the influence the Vikings had on Ireland. The top floor of the museum was all about archaeology. The whole place was child friendly. We are sure glad we did not live in these eras.
Now tired with sore feet we hopped on the bus to travel to the Kilmainham Gaol. We got there in time for the 3pm tour. It was built in 1796 and closed in 1924. It had a fascinating history. When first built it was considered a new type of prison where inmates had their own cells. However like all prisons it became over crowded. Many executions took place here the last being in 1916. The 14 executions that took place then changed Irish history as it lead to the final separation from England. Now we were very tired so had supper downtown then headed back to the B&B.
Tomorrow we are going out to Malahide Castle for the day then hope to see RiverDance in the evening. Will probably not post for a few days as we will not have internet access.

Monday August 22

We were excited to be getting up and starting our trip. Someone else was as well. It seemed Soren got up and dressed right away. He met us at the front door carmera in hand. He was ready to come with us. Both boys were very disappointed to be staying at home.
Trevor dropped us off at the airport before he went to work. The flight to Toronto was good. Charles and I were in different rows. We were not asked at check in if we wanted to sit together. We had the screens in the seats and were able to watch movies. We saw a couple with a baby on this flight. Truns out they were on the Dublin flight as well. They were doing 3 days in Dublin then 3 in London then home. We hope it goes well f0r them. Then again they are young!!!
We had three hours in Toronto so picked up a bite to eat. The plane for the next part of the trip had less room that the domestic flight. We only had central screens so had to watch the movies that were shown. Turned out that the lights and headphone plugs did not work at our seats. We were moved to the very back of the plane to the crew seats. We were not the only ones with problems but there were no other seats available. The two movies we could watch were Rango and Unforgotten.
Six hours passed very quickly. Soon we had our luggage and our car. We missed the trun off to the B&B so went about 25km out of our way before turning back. We tried plugging in the GPS but it didn't work the neither did the I-pod. So after finding the B&B and checking in, it was back to the airport. Turns out the fuse in the car had blown. A new fuss and an extra in case it happens again. All is well. We were beginning to wonder if we had some hex with electical things.
After a few hours nap we went in search of food. Had a wonderful meal of spagehtti and garlic toast. Feeling much better. After a good nights sleep we should be good to go.
